Kidjo will be joined by Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, Shakira, Juanes, K’Naan, Hugh Masekela and others for this once in a lifetime performance taking place of the eve of the first day of matches. She herself was born in Benin (West Africa), and has been deemed “Africa’s premier diva” by Time Magazine.

In addition, Angelique recently teamed up with Ziggy Marley on his new single inspired by the first-ever World Cup in Africa. The song, “Africa Land,” features Kidjo as well as Marley’s brother, Stephen, and can be downloaded for free through Ziggy Marley’s website.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup in the premier international soccer competition where the world’s best teams go face-to-face, and toe-to-toe, for the ultimate prize. The games run June 11 to July 11 and are played at several different venues throughout South Africa.

The sound of Oyo fuses rhythm, blues, soul, jazz ,and Beninese melodies into something quite spectacular and uniquely Angelique.  She also pays her tribute to the musicians that spoke to her, offering interpretations of songs from James Brown, Otis Redding, Miriam Makeba, and Santana.  The album features guest appearances by John Legend, Bono, Roy Hargrove, and Dianne Reeves.

Kidjo’s last album, Djin Djin, was released in May 2007 with guest performers Josh Groban, Carlos Santana, Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, Joss Stone, Ziggy Marley, Branford Marsalis, and Amadou and Mariam. The album won a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding World Music album and a Grammy for Best Contemporary World Music album.
